Assemble your rod

First, we want to get the fly rod all setup. Assemble your fly rod and then thread the fly line through the guides with about 8ft of fly line left out from the rod tip.

Find the balancing point

Next, we need to figure out where the best place is to balance the rod. So grip the rod wherever is most comfortable for you on the grip. Typically this is 1/2in-1.5in down from the top of the grip.

Hold that grip position and then slowly release your hand and try to balance the rod on your index finger or forward most finger if you typically cast like this.

For tip heavy rod

If the rod tip falls down then you will take a balancing ring from the box and place it as far back on the rod as you can while still keeping the ring secure. Typically this is going to be against the cork butt or just behind the reel.

Test the rod balance. If it still falls to the ground then add the next ring. You will keep adding rings until the rod is balanced. And if you run out of room behind the reel start applying them just above the reel.

For butt heavy rod

If your rod tip flys up to the sky, then the total weight of your rig is more than it needs to be. We recommend switching to a lighter reel and then adding the balancing rings to achieve perfect balance. This will ensure your rig is as light as possible while still being balanced, to give you the best performance and comfort possible.
